Futur I can express future plans, predictions or assumptions; it is not compulsory whenever an event is in the future.

The idea

Conjugate werden and place the main infinitive at the end. Present tense with morgen or another clear time expression often expresses the same future timing.

Watch out

Werden takes the person ending; the following verb stays in the infinitive: Sie wird kommen. A clear time phrase can also make present tense refer to the future.

Try it yourself

  1. Wir ___ später anrufen. (werden / wird)

    Show answer or example answer

    werden

Answer: “werden”. Werden must agree with the subject; the main action stays in the infinitive.

  2. Sie wird morgen ___. (kommt / kommen)

    Show answer or example answer

    kommen

Answer: “kommen”. The finite verb is already present; this complementary verb stays in the infinitive.

  3. Morgen ___ der Zug um acht. (fährt / fahren)

    Show answer or example answer

    fährt

Answer: “fährt”. The time expression makes the future clear, so present tense is possible.

Use it today

Write two new events following “Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.”. Add a clear time expression and explain why the chosen tense fits each event.
