Use das Heft for the nominative singular, das Heft for the accusative, dem Heft for the dative, and des Heftes for the genitive. In the dative plural use den Heften.

Useful combinations: in ein Heft schreiben; das Übungsheft; ein kariertes Heft. Practise each as a complete phrase; the article belongs to the noun even when an adjective comes between them.
