A concrete practice sequence

Write a picture or meaning cue on one side, then article, noun and plural on the other. Add one sentence with a case you are practising. On the next attempt, reconstruct the full phrase before looking at the card.

Check the model sentence

  • Das ist den Schlüssel zum Keller. Das ist der Schlüssel zum Keller.

After ist in this identification sentence, the noun phrase is nominative der Schlüssel.

Watch out

Do not store den as the permanent gender of a noun just because the example contains an accusative object. Record the dictionary form separately from the sentence form.

Try it yourself

  1. Welche Grundform gehört zu „mit dem Schlüssel“?

    Show answer or example answer

    der Schlüssel

Dem marks dative in the phrase; the masculine nominative article is der.

  2. Ergänze: Ich lege ___ Schlüssel auf das Regal. (der)

    Show answer or example answer

    den

The key is the direct object of lege, so the masculine article is accusative den.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Auf meiner Karte steht der Artikel neben dem Wort.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. An article-retrieval card should ask for the noun's gender in a meaningful phrase and then use that noun in a sentence. Learn the nominative article and plural together. A changed article inside a sentence may express case rather than a new gender. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
