A concrete practice sequence

Mark weil, dass and wenn in the examples. Put a light separator at the comma and underline each finite verb. Summarize the main statement first, then identify the added information: a reason, reported content, condition, description, contrast or time relationship.

Check the model sentence

  • Ich bleibe hier, weil ich warte auf den Bus. Ich bleibe hier, weil ich auf den Bus warte.

The finite verb warte comes at the end of the subordinate clause introduced by weil.

Watch out

Pausing at every word can hide the sentence's structure. A comma marks a grammatical boundary here, but the two clauses still form one connected message.

Try it yourself

  1. Was begründet der weil-Satz: „Wir gehen hinein, weil es draußen kalt ist“?

    Show answer or example answer

    Er begründet, warum wir hineingehen.

The subordinate clause supplies the reason for the action in the main clause.

  2. Ergänze: Ich weiß, dass der Kurs morgen ___. (beginnen)

    Show answer or example answer

    beginnt

The subject der Kurs takes beginnt, placed at the end of the dass-clause.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Bevor wir losgehen, fotografiere ich die Informationstafel.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. To read a long German sentence, identify the main clause and then the attached information. Find the finite verbs and the words that introduce subordinate clauses. Read each clause as a meaning unit before rebuilding the relationship between them. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
