The idea

Read each example and mark it as observation or inference. For every inference, identify the evidence that would be needed to confirm it. Finish with a two-sentence report: one observable detail followed by one clearly marked interpretation.

A concrete practice sequence

Read each example and mark it as observation or inference. For every inference, identify the evidence that would be needed to confirm it. Finish with a two-sentence report: one observable detail followed by one clearly marked interpretation.

Check the model sentence

  • Die Tür ist offen, also ist sicher jemand zu Hause. Die Tür ist offen; vielleicht ist jemand zu Hause.

An open door alone does not prove that someone is home; vielleicht preserves the inference.

Using this beside glotworld

Use these original examples as a separate practice sheet before or after a game session. glotworld offers A1, A2, B1 practice for German learners, with meanings and help in 12 languages, including English and Turkish. A microphone is not required. The game does not score pronunciation or award a language certificate; these exercises do not claim to appear in a particular game scene.

Examples

  • Auf dem Tisch liegt ein ungeöffneter Brief. An unopened letter lies on the table.
  • Vielleicht hat die Bewohnerin ihn noch nicht gesehen.Perhaps the resident has not seen it yet.
  • Die Uhr im Flur zeigt zehn nach vier. The clock in the hall shows ten past four.
  • Vermutlich ist die Batterie dieser Uhr leer.Presumably this clock's battery is flat.
  • Im Protokoll steht kein Name neben der Uhrzeit. There is no name next to the time in the report.
  • Wir wissen noch nicht, wer den Eintrag geschrieben hat.We do not yet know who wrote the entry.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not remove uncertainty when retelling. If the source says vielleicht, reporting the event as certain changes its meaning. An open question can be a more accurate conclusion than a confident guess.

Try it yourself

  1. Welche Formulierung markiert eine Vermutung: „Die Lampe brennt“ oder „Vielleicht arbeitet noch jemand“?

    Show answer or example answer

    Vielleicht arbeitet noch jemand.

Vielleicht explicitly marks the statement as uncertain rather than directly observed.

  2. Formuliere vorsichtig: „Der Zug ist ausgefallen.“ Du kennst nur eine leere Anzeige.

    Show answer or example answer

    Vielleicht ist der Zug ausgefallen.

The missing display does not establish cancellation; the uncertainty marker keeps that distinction visible.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Wir wissen noch nicht, wer den Eintrag geschrieben hat.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. To discuss a mystery in German, separate what a text actually states from what you infer. Use a direct statement for evidence and markers such as vielleicht or vermutlich for a guess. A plausible explanation is still not a stated fact. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
