A concrete practice sequence

Circle each finite verb and underline its subject. Examine each clause separately when a sentence contains two clauses. In a verb bracket, identify which form changes with ich, du or wir. Rewrite one sentence with a plural subject and adjust the finite form.

Check the model sentence

  • Die Gäste hat lange gewartet. Die Gäste haben lange gewartet.

The plural subject die Gäste requires the finite auxiliary haben.

Watch out

The last verb is not automatically finite. In a perfect-tense main clause the participle is often last while the auxiliary near the beginning changes with the subject.

Try it yourself

  1. Welches Verb ist finit: „Die Gruppe möchte früher gehen“?

    Show answer or example answer

    möchte

Möchte carries the singular subject agreement; gehen remains the infinitive.

  2. Ändere zu „wir“: „Ich habe den Hinweis gelesen.“

    Show answer or example answer

    Wir haben den Hinweis gelesen.

Habe becomes haben while the participle gelesen remains unchanged.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Wir können die restlichen Fragen später gemeinsam klären.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. Finding the finite verb helps you identify who a German clause is about and how its words fit together. Check the verb form against the subject. An infinitive or participle may express the main action while another verb carries person and tense. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
