A concrete practice sequence

Make two columns headed basic form and sentence form. Put der Plan in the first, then examples with den Plan and dem Plan in the second. Explain the case trigger for each changed article before practising a new noun.

Check the model sentence

  • Mit den Plan finde ich den Ausgang. Mit dem Plan finde ich den Ausgang.

Mit takes dative, and the singular masculine noun Plan therefore uses dem.

Using this beside glotworld

Use these original examples as a separate practice sheet before or after a game session. glotworld offers A1, A2, B1 practice for German learners, with meanings and help in 12 languages, including English and Turkish. A microphone is not required. The game does not score pronunciation or award a language certificate; these exercises do not claim to appear in a particular game scene.

Examples

  • Der Plan für den Rundgang liegt auf dem Empfangstisch. The tour plan is on the reception desk.
  • Ich lese den Plan vor dem Beginn der Besichtigung.I read the plan before the viewing begins.
  • Mit dem Plan finde ich auch den hinteren Ausgang. With the plan I also find the rear exit.
  • Die Pläne für beide Gruppen unterscheiden sich leicht. The plans for both groups differ slightly.
  • Auf den Plänen sind die Treffpunkte deutlich markiert. The meeting points are clearly marked on the plans.
  • Ich notiere die Grundform getrennt von der Satzform.I record the basic form separately from the sentence form.

Watch out

Do not learn a separate gender for every changed article. Die can be a feminine singular article or a plural article; its role depends on the full noun phrase.

Try it yourself

  1. Nenne die Grundform zu „auf dem Bildschirm“.

    Show answer or example answer

    der Bildschirm

Dem is a dative form here; the dictionary article remains der.

  2. Ergänze: Ich lese ___ Plan. (der)

    Show answer or example answer

    den

Plan is the masculine direct object of lese and takes accusative den.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Ich notiere die Grundform getrennt von der Satzform.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. Separate two questions when checking a German noun phrase: what gender the noun has, and what case the sentence requires. Write the dictionary form first. Then choose the article for its role, so a dative error does not masquerade as forgotten gender. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
