A concrete practice sequence

Underline ich, mein and verb endings in the first-person examples. Rewrite the passage about Lea using sie and ihr where appropriate. Check every possessive separately: ihr can identify an owner, while the ending depends on the following noun.

Check the model sentence

  • Lea sagt, dass sie meinen Schlüssel sucht. Lea sagt, dass sie ihren Schlüssel sucht.

If Lea is looking for her own key, third-person reporting needs ihren, with accusative masculine ending.

Watch out

Do not turn every occurrence of sie into the same person automatically. When two women are present, repeat a name if the pronoun's reference would be unclear.

Try it yourself

  1. Berichte über Lea: „Ich suche meine Tasche.“

    Show answer or example answer

    Lea sucht ihre Tasche.

The subject becomes Lea, the verb becomes sucht and meine becomes ihre for Lea's possession.

  2. Berichte über Tom: „Ich habe meinen Bruder angerufen.“

    Show answer or example answer

    Tom hat seinen Bruder angerufen.

Third-person masculine reporting changes ich habe to Tom hat and meinen to seinen.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Tom erzählt, dass seine Schwester die Tasche gefunden hat.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. Changing a scene's viewpoint tests German pronouns, verb forms and ownership. First retell what a character says about themselves. Then report the same events in the third person without adding knowledge that the character does not have. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
