A concrete practice sequence

Use one colour for the finite verb and another for the final verb part. Label the pattern as modal, perfect or separable present. Rebuild the sentence from memory and check both bracket ends before checking the middle.

Check the model sentence

  • Ich möchte abholen die Karten. Ich möchte die Karten abholen.

Möchte opens this verb bracket and the infinitive abholen closes it.

Watch out

Colour is a working aid, not a grammar rule. A single finite verb may need no second bracket part; do not invent one just to complete a drawing.

Try it yourself

  1. Welche zwei Teile bilden die Klammer: „Wir haben die Antwort erhalten“?

    Show answer or example answer

    haben – erhalten

Haben is the finite auxiliary and erhalten is the final participle.

  2. Ordne: „morgen / ich / an / rufe“.

    Show answer or example answer

    Ich rufe morgen an.

Anrufen separates in this main clause, leaving an at the end.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Ich schreibe die neue Lieferadresse in meinen Kalender auf.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. Marking a German verb bracket makes the two parts of a predicate visible. Locate the finite verb and the final infinitive, participle or separable prefix. Then place the other information between them without assuming every German sentence uses the same bracket. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
