The idea

Put a situation cue on the front and a full model sentence on the back. Mark the complement rather than colouring every word. Test the card with a different person or object, and compare the article as well as the verb.

A concrete practice sequence

Put a situation cue on the front and a full model sentence on the back. Mark the complement rather than colouring every word. Test the card with a different person or object, and compare the article as well as the verb.

Check the model sentence

  • Ich helfe den neuen Kollegen. (eine Person) Ich helfe dem neuen Kollegen.

Helfen takes dative; for one male colleague the phrase is dem neuen Kollegen.

Watch out

A preposition can belong to the verb's learned pattern; it is not always a literal place word. Keep the pattern and its meaning together instead of guessing the case from an English preposition.

Try it yourself

  1. Ergänze: Wir warten auf ___ Bus. (der)

    Show answer or example answer

    den

Warten auf takes accusative here, giving auf den Bus.

  2. Ergänze: Die Nachbarin hilft ___ Kind. (das)

    Show answer or example answer

    dem

The person helped is a dative complement of helfen: dem Kind.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Wir bedanken uns bei der Helferin für ihre Geduld.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. A useful German verb card records the action together with its sentence pattern. Write warten auf plus an accusative example, or helfen plus a dative example. A translation of the infinitive alone does not show which complements a sentence needs. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
