The idea

A Kuchenverkauf or Kuchenbasar is a common fundraiser in Germany at school festivals, Kita events, parish fairs, sports days and Christmas markets. Parents and members bake at home, and the slices are sold cheaply, with the money going to a class trip, equipment or a good cause. Organisers also need people to set up, sell slices (Ausgabe) and clear up. Some events ask for a list of ingredients because of allergies, and practices vary. Grammar: after “sein”, the complement stays in the nominative: “ein selbst gebackener Kuchen”.

Other ways to say it

“Ich kann einen Kuchen backen oder beim Aufbau helfen.” – Offers two options and lets the organiser choose.

“Darf es auch ein gekaufter Kuchen sein?” – Polite check whether a shop-bought cake is acceptable.

“Für welche Schicht am Stand fehlt noch jemand?” – Practical question about open helper shifts.

Examples

  • Für euren Kuchenverkauf möchte ich einen Beitrag anbieten.I would like to offer a contribution to your cake sale.
  • Es fehlt noch jemand für die Ausgabe. We still need someone to serve.
  • Muss mein Beitrag unbedingt ein selbst gebackener Kuchen sein?Does my contribution have to be a homemade cake?
  • Nein, bei uns ist praktische Hilfe genauso willkommen. No, practical help is just as welcome with us.
  • Dann übernehme ich lieber eine Stunde am Stand. Then I would rather take a one-hour shift at the stall.
  • Danke, so passt der Beitrag zu deinem tatsächlichen Angebot.Thank you; that matches the contribution to what you can actually offer.

Watch out

“Muss mein Beitrag einen selbst gebackenen Kuchen sein?” → “Muss mein Beitrag ein selbst gebackener Kuchen sein?”: “Sein” links two things that are the same, so both stand in the nominative. Learners often switch to the accusative as if the cake were an object of the verb.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would like to offer a contribution to your cake sale.

    Show answer or example answer

Für euren Kuchenverkauf möchte ich einen Beitrag anbieten.

“Für euren Kuchenverkauf” comes first, so the verb “möchte” follows and the subject “ich” after it. “Einen Beitrag” is accusative, and “anbieten” stays whole at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: Beitrag / ein / gebackener / Kuchen / mein / Muss / sein / selbst / unbedingt

    Show answer or example answer

Muss mein Beitrag unbedingt ein selbst gebackener Kuchen sein?

“Unbedingt” means “necessarily” and adds emphasis. “Selbst gebacken” is written as two words here and takes the adjective ending -er after “ein” in the nominative masculine.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thank you; that matches the contribution to what you can actually offer.

    Show answer or example answer

Danke, so passt der Beitrag zu deinem tatsächlichen Angebot.

“Passen zu” takes the dative: “zu deinem tatsächlichen Angebot”. “So” at the start means “this way”, so the verb “passt” follows directly.

Use it today

Your child’s school asks parents to support a cake sale. Write a reply saying whether you will bake something or help at the stall, and when you are available.
