The idea
In many German workplaces, people separate work and private life fairly clearly, and small talk tends to stay on neutral topics: weekend plans, holidays, weather, travel, sport or the project itself. Questions about salary, religion, health or relationships are usually avoided with people you do not know well. A short answer to a personal question is often simply privacy, not unfriendliness. Of course, this varies with the people and the team. Grammar: “die Frage nach” takes the dative (“nach deinem Wochenende”), and “sprechen über” takes the accusative (“über unser Projekt”).
Other ways to say it
“Und, hattest du ein schönes Wochenende?” – Light, typical Monday question that needs only a short answer.
“Kein Problem, wir müssen nicht darüber reden.” – Friendly way to drop a topic someone avoids.
“Wie läuft es eigentlich mit dem neuen Projekt?” – Neutral switch to a work topic; “eigentlich” softens it.
Examples
- Ist die Frage nach deinem Wochenende für dich in Ordnung? Is asking about your weekend all right with you?
- Darüber erzähle ich heute nur ungern.I would rather not talk about it today.
- Dann sprechen wir einfach über unser gemeinsames Projekt. Then let us simply talk about our shared project.
- Danke, dafür bin ich gerade eher offen. Thanks; I am more open to that at the moment.
- Ich möchte aus einer kurzen Antwort nichts Persönliches ableiten.I do not want to infer anything personal from a brief answer.
- Gut, manchmal passt ein Thema einfach nicht.Good; sometimes a topic simply does not suit the moment.

Watch out
“Ist die Frage über dein Wochenende in Ordnung?” → “Ist die Frage nach deinem Wochenende in Ordnung?”: English “a question about” suggests “über”. When you ask for information about something, German uses “die Frage nach” with the dative.

Show answer or example answer
Ist die Frage nach deinem Wochenende für dich in Ordnung?
“Ist … in Ordnung?” asks whether something is acceptable. “Die Frage nach deinem Wochenende” is the subject, with nach plus dative, and “für dich” is accusative.
Put the words in order: Dann / einfach / gemeinsames / Projekt / sprechen / über / unser / wir
Show answer or example answer
Dann sprechen wir einfach über unser gemeinsames Projekt.
“Dann” opens the sentence, so “sprechen” comes second and acts as a friendly suggestion. “Über unser gemeinsames Projekt” is accusative neuter, with the ending -es after unser.
Write this sentence in German: Good; sometimes a topic simply does not suit the moment.
Show answer or example answer
Gut, manchmal passt ein Thema einfach nicht.
“Manchmal” stands after the comma and before the verb “passt”. “Passen” here means to fit the moment, and “einfach” adds “simply, without further reason”.
