The idea
Ehrenamt means unpaid voluntary work, and it is widespread in Germany: in sports clubs, volunteer fire brigades (Freiwillige Feuerwehr), food banks (Tafeln), churches, schools, refugee support and care for older people. Some roles pay a small expense allowance, but the work itself is not a job. Because organisations depend on planning, they usually welcome clear statements about how often you can help. Grammar: the adverb “ehrenamtlich” describes how you help; in the request, “plant … ein” is the ihr imperative of the separable verb einplanen.
Other ways to say it
“Ich kann mich zwei Stunden pro Woche engagieren.” – Neutral; “sich engagieren” is the usual verb for volunteering.
“Mehr als einen Einsatz im Monat schaffe ich leider nicht.” – Clear limit; “schaffen” means to manage.
“Fragt mich bitte vorher, bevor ihr mich zusätzlich einteilt.” – Casual ihr form; asks to be consulted first.
Examples
- Ich möchte ehrenamtlich helfen, kann aber nur einmal im Monat kommen.I would like to volunteer, but I can only come once a month.
- Für manche Aufgaben passt dieser Rhythmus gut. That frequency suits some tasks well.
- Bitte plant mich nicht automatisch für zusätzliche Termine ein. Please do not automatically schedule me for additional dates.
- Wir fragen bei jeder Erweiterung vorher nach.We will ask beforehand about every addition.
- Dann kann ich zuverlässig zusagen, was tatsächlich möglich ist. Then I can reliably commit to what is actually possible.
- Genau, klare Grenzen helfen unserer gemeinsamen Planung.Exactly; clear boundaries help our shared planning.

Watch out
“Klare Grenzen helfen unsere gemeinsame Planung.” → “Klare Grenzen helfen unserer gemeinsamen Planung.”: “Helfen” takes the dative, not the accusative as English “help” might suggest. So the feminine noun phrase becomes “unserer gemeinsamen Planung”.

Translate into German: I would like to volunteer, but I can only come once a month.
Show answer or example answer
Ich möchte ehrenamtlich helfen, kann aber nur einmal im Monat kommen.
“Aber” sits after the verb “kann” in the second clause, not at its start, which sounds natural in German. Both modals send their infinitives to the end: “helfen”, “kommen”.
Put the words in order: automatisch / Bitte / ein / für / mich / nicht / plant / Termine / zusätzliche
Show answer or example answer
Bitte plant mich nicht automatisch für zusätzliche Termine ein.
“Plant … ein” is the ihr imperative, addressing the whole team, with the separable prefix at the end. “Für zusätzliche Termine” is accusative plural after für.
Write this sentence in German: Exactly; clear boundaries help our shared planning.

Genau, klare Grenzen helfen unserer gemeinsamen Planung.
“Klare Grenzen” is a plural subject without an article, so the adjective takes the strong ending -e. “Helfen” requires the dative “unserer gemeinsamen Planung”.
