The idea

Sundays and public holidays are protected as days of rest in Germany, and many noisy activities, such as drilling or mowing with loud machines, are restricted on those days. Saturdays are usually treated more like a working day, but local regulations, state law and the Hausordnung can set quiet periods, and the details differ. So check the rules for your building and town rather than relying on times someone remembers. Telling neighbours in advance is common courtesy, though it does not replace the rules. Grammar: “ansprechen” takes a direct accusative object.

Other ways to say it

“Ich muss am Samstag ein paar Löcher bohren. Ist Ihnen eine bestimmte Zeit lieber?” – Polite Sie version for neighbours; asks for their preferred time.

“Wo finde ich die Ruhezeiten für unser Haus?” – Neutral question about where the rules are written down.

“Es wird am Samstagvormittag kurz laut, tut mir leid.” – Short advance notice, for example on a note in the stairwell.

Examples

  • Ich plane am Wochenende eine laute Arbeit und möchte vorher nachfragen.I am planning a noisy task at the weekend and would like to ask beforehand.
  • Hast du die geltenden Hinweise für diesen Ort geprüft?Have you checked the applicable information for this place?
  • Noch nicht, ich möchte keine Uhrzeiten einfach annehmen. Not yet; I do not want to simply assume times.
  • Dann kläre zuerst die konkreten Vorgaben. Then first clarify the specific requirements.
  • Zusätzlich spreche ich die betroffenen Nachbarn an.I will also speak to the neighbors affected.
  • So trennst du Vorschriften und persönliche Abstimmung. That separates requirements from personal coordination.

Watch out

“Ich spreche mit den betroffenen Nachbarn an.” → “Ich spreche die betroffenen Nachbarn an.”: Learners mix “sprechen mit” (dative) and “ansprechen” (accusative, to approach someone). With “ansprechen” the neighbours are a direct object, so there is no “mit”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I am planning a noisy task at the weekend and would like to ask beforehand.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich plane am Wochenende eine laute Arbeit und möchte vorher nachfragen.

Two main clauses share the subject “ich” and are joined by “und”. “Am Wochenende” is a time phrase, and after “möchte” the separable infinitive “nachfragen” stays whole at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: annehmen / einfach / ich / keine / möchte / nicht / Noch / Uhrzeiten

    Show answer or example answer

Noch nicht, ich möchte keine Uhrzeiten einfach annehmen.

“Noch nicht” answers the question briefly. In the second clause, “keine Uhrzeiten” negates the plural noun, and “einfach annehmen” means to assume without checking.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That separates requirements from personal coordination.

    Show answer or example answer

So trennst du Vorschriften und persönliche Abstimmung.

“So” opens the sentence and the verb “trennst” follows. “Trennen” takes two accusative objects joined by “und”: rules on one side, personal arrangements on the other.

Use it today

You need to drill holes for shelves on Saturday. Write a short note for your building’s stairwell telling neighbours when it will be noisy and how long it will take.
