The idea

Compare a small sentence pair, identify the form that changes and connect it to meaning or a verb pattern. Make a new pair with different words, then check it. Revisit the distinction without notes later. Here, sehen and helfen require different cases even with the same person.

Examples

  • Ich vergleiche zwei ähnliche Sätze.
  • Ich sehe den Mann.
  • Ich helfe dem Mann.
  • Dann markiere ich den Unterschied.
  • Ich bilde selbst ein neues Satzpaar.
  • Am nächsten Tag prüfe ich die Regel ohne Notizen.

Watch out

Memorizing a rule without using it in a new sentence can leave the practical choice unresolved.

Try it yourself

  1. Ergänzen Sie den bestimmten Artikel nach helfen: Ich helfe ___ Frau.

    Show answer or example answer

    der

Helfen takes dative, so die Frau becomes der Frau.

  2. Ergänzen Sie den bestimmten Artikel nach sehen: Ich sehe ___ Frau.

    Show answer or example answer

    die

Sehen takes accusative; the feminine form remains die Frau.

  3. Warum unterscheiden sich die Artikel?

    Show answer or example answer

Helfen verlangt Dativ; sehen verlangt Akkusativ.

The verb pattern determines the case here, not whether the noun refers to a person.
