The idea
Sich beziehen auf plus accusative asks what something refers to: “Worauf bezieht sich das?” For people: “Auf wen bezieht sich …?” Answers often use meinen: “Die Anweisung meint …”. “Welche der beiden Größen” combines welch- with a genitive plural to choose between two known options. “Nach Augenmaß” is an idiom for judging by eye without measuring; many workplaces prefer sizes fixed in writing.
Other ways to say it
“Ist mit klein die Kartongröße gemeint?” – Neutral; checks one interpretation with “gemeint sein”.
“Worauf bezieht sich die Angabe klein genau?” – Open question; good when you have no guess yet.
“Welche Kartongröße soll ich für diesen Artikel nehmen?” – Practical and direct; asks for the result rather than the meaning.
Examples
- Bezieht sich klein auf den Karton oder den Artikel?Does small refer to the box or the item?
- Die Anweisung meint die kleinere Kartongröße.The instruction means the smaller box size.
- Welche der beiden Größen ist dafür vorgesehen?Which of the two sizes is intended for it?
- Das steht in der ergänzten Packliste. That is in the updated packing list.
- Dann prüfe ich die genaue Größenangabe. Then I will check the exact size information.
- So vermeiden wir eine Entscheidung nach Augenmaß.That avoids deciding by eye.

Watch out
“Bezieht sich klein zu dem Karton?” → “Bezieht sich klein auf den Karton?”: Sich beziehen always takes auf with the accusative. English “refer to” leads learners to use zu, which does not work with this verb.
Try it yourself
Translate into German: Does small refer to the box or the item?
Show answer or example answer
Bezieht sich klein auf den Karton oder den Artikel?
The yes/no question starts with the verb “Bezieht”, followed by the reflexive “sich”. Auf takes the accusative, so it is “auf den Karton” and, after oder, “den Artikel”.
Put the words in order: beiden / dafür / der / Größen / ist / vorgesehen / Welche
Show answer or example answer
Welche der beiden Größen ist dafür vorgesehen?
“Welche der beiden Größen” uses the genitive plural der beiden to pick one of two. “Dafür” refers back to the item being packed.
Write this sentence in German: That avoids deciding by eye.

So vermeiden wir eine Entscheidung nach Augenmaß.
“So” sums up the check in the packing list. “Nach Augenmaß” is a fixed phrase for deciding by eye. Vermeiden takes the accusative “eine Entscheidung”.

A packing slip says “großen Karton verwenden”, but two large sizes are on the shelf. Ask your supervisor which size the instruction means and where that is written down.
