The idea

Handover counts often use the werden passive: “Übergeben werden …”, “Geliefert wurden …”. The participle can open the sentence for emphasis; the finite verb stays in second position and agrees with the plural goods. Compound nouns build precise categories: Einzelkarton, Palettenanzahl, Kennzeichnung. The separable verb abgleichen (to reconcile) splits in main clauses: “wir gleichen die Liste ab”. Between drivers and warehouse staff, neutral Sie or wir forms are common.

Other ways to say it

“Ich übergebe Ihnen vier Paletten und zwei lose Kartons.” – Active and personal; natural when the driver speaks directly to the receiver.

“Insgesamt sind es vier Paletten plus zwei Einzelkartons.” – Neutral; “insgesamt” stresses the total.

“Können wir die Anzahl kurz gemeinsam nachzählen?” – Polite request to count together before anyone signs.

Examples

  • Übergeben werden vier Paletten und zwei Einzelkartons.Four pallets and two individual boxes are being handed over.
  • Zählen die Kartons als eigene Position?Do the boxes count as a separate item?
  • Auf der Übersicht stehen sie separat. They are listed separately on the overview.
  • Dann wiederholen wir beide Mengen einzeln. Then let us repeat both quantities separately.
  • Ich prüfe auch die Kennzeichnung jeder Palette.I will also check the labeling of each pallet.
  • Anschließend gleichen wir die vollständige Liste ab.Afterwards we will compare the complete list.

Watch out

“Übergeben wird vier Paletten und zwei Einzelkartons.” → “Übergeben werden vier Paletten und zwei Einzelkartons.”: The subject of the passive sentence is the goods, which are plural, so werden must be plural too. Because the subject comes late, learners often default to the singular wird.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Four pallets and two individual boxes are being handed over.

    Show answer or example answer

Übergeben werden vier Paletten und zwei Einzelkartons.

The participle “Übergeben” opens the sentence, the finite verb “werden” follows in second place, and the plural subject comes last. Each quantity is named with the noun it counts.

  2. Put the words in order: Auf / der / separat / sie / stehen / Übersicht

    Show answer or example answer

Auf der Übersicht stehen sie separat.

“Auf der Übersicht” is a dative location phrase in first position, so “stehen” comes second. “Sie” refers to the cartons; “separat” means listed on a line of their own.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Afterwards we will compare the complete list.

    Show answer or example answer

Anschließend gleichen wir die vollständige Liste ab.

“Anschließend” (afterwards) fills the first position; the separable verb abgleichen splits into “gleichen … ab”, with the prefix at the end of the clause.

Use it today

A driver hands you three pallets and one loose carton. Say the count back in one sentence and ask whether the carton is listed as its own item.
