The idea

Use the appointment situation in the examples to write a short refusal. Add a true alternative involving another time, format or person. Remove any wording that sounds like a promise unless you intend to commit to it.

A concrete practice sequence

• Ich kann nicht heute, aber sicher vielleicht morgen. → Heute kann ich nicht; ich kann prüfen, ob es morgen möglich ist.

  Sicher and vielleicht conflict here; the revised sentence promises only a check.

   The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. A useful refusal in German states the limit clearly and offers an alternative when one is available. Practise the three parts separately: acknowledgement, refusal and next option. Politeness does not require promising something you cannot do. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
