A concrete practice sequence

Read the first German example and state its probable purpose. Check the translation to confirm or correct that interpretation. Hide it again and point to the German phrase expressing the request, time or reason. Repeat with another example.

Check the model sentence

  • Ich bin warten auf Ihre Antwort. Ich warte auf Ihre Antwort.

German uses the finite verb warte here; it does not copy the English progressive with bin plus an infinitive.

Watch out

Avoid treating translation as a word-for-word alignment rule. A natural English sentence may use a different order or several words where German uses one.

Try it yourself

  1. Welche deutsche Wortgruppe bedeutet hier „by tomorrow“: „bis morgen“ oder „seit morgen“?

    Show answer or example answer

    bis morgen

Bis morgen marks the deadline; seit does not express this future deadline.

  2. Warum prüfst du nach der Übersetzung nochmals den deutschen Satz?

    Show answer or example answer

Damit ich die Bedeutung mit den deutschen Ausdrücken verbinde.

Returning to the source connects the confirmed meaning with the target-language wording.

  3. Schreibe eine neue Variante des letzten Beispiels. Ändere eine konkrete Information und behalte den Satzbau bei.

    Show answer or example answer

Muster zum Variieren: Nach dem Vergleich lese ich den deutschen Satz noch einmal.

The last example supplies a sentence pattern, not a single compulsory answer. Change a detail that fits the situation and keep the verb, case and meaning consistent.

Use it today

Repeat the sequence with a fresh situation. Choose the timing of translation help according to the task. Try to identify the main message first when the context gives enough support. Open the translation when uncertainty prevents understanding, then return to the German and locate the words that carry that meaning. Keep one first attempt and one correction so you can compare what you produced before seeing a model.
