The idea

Comparative + als compares two things; a comma separates als when a full clause follows (“besser, als ich erwartet hatte”). Without a clause, no comma: “besser als erwartet”. Laufen in the past (lief) is the everyday verb for how an event went. The pluperfect is formed with hatte/war + participle. “Überraschen” takes an accusative: Was hat dich überrascht?

Other ways to say it

“Das lief besser als erwartet.” – Neutral and short; the shortened form without a clause.

“Es war viel besser, als ich befürchtet hatte.” – Neutral; befürchten shows you had expected problems.

“Das Ergebnis hat meine Erwartungen übertroffen.” – Formal; suits written feedback and reports.

Examples

  • Die erste Gesprächsrunde lief besser, als ich erwartet hatte. The first discussion round went better than I expected.
  • Was hat dich besonders überrascht? What especially surprised you?
  • Ich konnte mehrere Rückfragen selbst beantworten.I could answer several questions myself.
  • Dann war deine Vorbereitung hilfreich. Then your preparation was helpful.
  • Trotzdem notiere ich die Stellen, die noch schwierig waren.I will still note the parts that remained difficult.
  • Gut, das positive Ergebnis und die offenen Punkte passen zusammen.Good; the positive result and unresolved points can coexist.

Watch out

“Die Runde lief besser wie ich erwartet hatte.” → “Die Runde lief besser, als ich erwartet hatte.”: After a comparative standard German uses als, not wie. Wie is for equal comparisons (so gut wie). A clause after als also needs a comma.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The first discussion round went better than I expected.

    Show answer or example answer

Die erste Gesprächsrunde lief besser, als ich erwartet hatte.

Lief is the past of laufen. Besser is the comparative; the als-clause has the pluperfect “erwartet hatte” at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: beantworten / Ich / konnte / mehrere / Rückfragen / selbst

    Show answer or example answer

Ich konnte mehrere Rückfragen selbst beantworten.

Konnte with selbst stresses own ability. Mehrere Rückfragen is accusative plural; beantworten stays at the end.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; the positive result and unresolved points can coexist.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, das positive Ergebnis und die offenen Punkte passen zusammen.

“Zusammenpassen” means to fit together. Both the positive result and the open points are the subject, so the verb is plural.
