The idea

“Gesundheit” is a one-word wish and needs no verb or article. The reply is a simple “Danke” or “Danke schön”. Wegen normally takes the genitive, but with personal pronouns everyday speech uses “wegen mir”; written standard German prefers “meinetwegen”. Falls means “in case” or “if” and sends the verb to the end: falls du eines übrig hast. Eines refers back to das Taschentuch.

Other ways to say it

“Gesundheit!” – Neutral and universal; works with du and Sie.

“Danke schön, entschuldigt bitte.” – Casual reply from the sneezer to a group; apologises for the interruption.

“Möchten Sie ein Taschentuch?” – Polite Sie offer of a tissue to someone you do not know well.

  • Gesundheit, du musst nicht wegen mir aufstehen.Bless you; you do not need to get up because of me.
  • Danke, das kam gerade unerwartet. Thanks; that came unexpectedly.
  • Brauchst du ein frisches Taschentuch?Do you need a fresh tissue?
  • Ja, falls du eines übrig hast.Yes, if you have a spare one.

Watch out

“Gott segne dich!” → “Gesundheit!”: Translating English “Bless you” literally produces a religious blessing that sounds odd after a sneeze. The everyday German formula is simply “Gesundheit”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Bless you; you do not need to get up because of me.

    Show answer or example answer

Gesundheit, du musst nicht wegen mir aufstehen.

“Gesundheit” stands alone, then a comma. “Nicht müssen” means there is no need; “wegen mir” is the everyday form of meinetwegen.

  2. Put the words in order: du / ein / frisches / Taschentuch / Brauchst

    Show answer or example answer

    Brauchst du ein frisches Taschentuch?

A yes–no question with brauchen first. Taschentuch is neuter, so the accusative is ein frisches.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thanks; then we can continue reading shortly.

    Show answer or example answer

Danke, dann können wir gleich weiterlesen.

Dann pushes können before the subject wir; weiterlesen stays together at the end after the modal. Gleich means very soon.

Use it today

During a study session, your partner sneezes twice. React with the usual German word and offer a tissue in one short sentence using du.
