The idea

Besserung is the noun from besser: improvement, recovery. “Gute Besserung!” works alone or after wünschen with dative + accusative. With Sie it becomes “Ich wünsche Ihnen gute Besserung”. “Nicht müssen” means there is no need (it does not forbid anything): “Du musst nicht antworten.” Antworten auf takes the accusative. An offer to listen is phrased conditionally with wenn so that it stays open: “Wenn du erzählen möchtest, höre ich dir gern zu.”

Other ways to say it

“Gute Besserung und erhol dich gut!” – Casual; adds a friendly wish for rest.

“Ich wünsche Ihnen eine baldige Genesung.” – Formal and written; suits a card or email to a colleague you address with Sie.

“Werd schnell wieder gesund!” – Casual and direct; between friends and family.

Watch out

“Du darfst auf diese Nachricht nicht antworten.” → “Du musst auf diese Nachricht nicht antworten.”: Learners map English “must not” onto “nicht dürfen”, which means it is forbidden. To say there is no need, German uses “nicht müssen”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I wish you a speedy recovery and all the best.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich wünsche dir gute Besserung und alles Gute.

Wünschen takes dir in the dative and two accusative wishes linked by und. Gute Besserung has no article, like most fixed wishes.

  2. Put the words in order: antworten / auf / diese / Du / musst / Nachricht / nicht

    Show answer or example answer

Du musst auf diese Nachricht nicht antworten.

“Nicht müssen” removes an obligation without forbidding anything. Antworten auf takes the accusative: auf diese Nachricht.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Thanks; I will take you up on that if needed.

    Show answer or example answer

Danke, ich komme bei Bedarf darauf zurück.

“Bei Bedarf” means if needed; “auf etwas zurückkommen” means to take up an offer later. Polite and non-committal.

Use it today

A colleague is off sick for a few days. Write a three-sentence message: wish him a good recovery, say he does not need to reply, and offer one practical form of help.
