The idea

Vorsichtshalber, sicherheitshalber and “für alle Fälle” all mean just in case; “für alle Fälle” is the most casual. They sit in the middle field after the verb. Mitnehmen is separable: ich nehme … mit. “Auf etwas vorbereitet sein” takes auf + accusative. Die Vorsorge is a precaution; die Vorgabe and die Anforderung are requirements set by others.

Other ways to say it

“Ich nehme für alle Fälle noch eine Kopie mit.” – Casual; “für alle Fälle” is very common in speech.

“Sicherheitshalber drucke ich die Unterlagen zweimal aus.” – Neutral; sicherheitshalber stresses safety over convenience.

“Man weiß ja nie.” – Casual comment that justifies a precaution.

Watch out

“Ich nehme eine zweite Kopie mit, nur im Fall.” → “Ich nehme für alle Fälle eine zweite Kopie mit.”: English “just in case” cannot be copied as “nur im Fall”. German says für alle Fälle, vorsichtshalber or sicherheitshalber.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I will take a second copy just in case.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich nehme vorsichtshalber eine zweite Kopie mit.

Nehme … mit frames the sentence. Vorsichtshalber stands right after the verb; “eine zweite Kopie” is feminine accusative.

  2. Put the words in order: auf / eine / ich / möchte / mögliche / Nein / nur / Rückfrage / sein / vorbereitet

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, ich möchte nur auf eine mögliche Rückfrage vorbereitet sein.

“Auf eine mögliche Rückfrage vorbereitet sein” uses auf + accusative. Nur stresses that it is a personal choice.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; let us distinguish a suggestion from an actual requirement.

Gut, wir unterscheiden Empfehlung und tatsächliche Vorgabe.

A wir suggestion with unterscheiden and two accusative objects. Tatsächlich turns Vorgabe into an actual rule.
