The idea
“Vor” is a preposition and takes a time or noun (vor zehn Uhr, vor dem Termin); “bevor” is a conjunction and needs a clause. “Frühestens” (at the earliest) is the positive counterpart: “frühestens um zehn”. “Der früheste Zeitpunkt” is the superlative adjective. “Etwas für etwas halten” (to regard as) takes für + accusative.
Other ways to say it
“Frühestens um zehn kann ich die Unterlagen abholen.” – Neutral; states the lower limit positively.
“Vor zehn klappt es bei mir nicht.” – Casual; “klappen” means to work out.
“Eine Abholung ist mir erst ab 10 Uhr möglich.” – Formal and written; suits emails to offices or shops.
Examples
- Vor zehn Uhr kann ich die Unterlagen nicht abholen.I cannot collect the documents before ten o’clock.
- Ist zehn dann schon verbindlich möglich? Is ten definitely possible, then?
- Zehn ist nur der früheste denkbare Zeitpunkt.Ten is only the earliest possible time.
- Wann kannst du es genauer sagen? When can you be more precise?
- Nach meinem ersten Termin melde ich mich.I will get in touch after my first appointment.
- Dann halte ich deine Angabe noch nicht für eine Zusage. Then I will not yet treat your information as a commitment.

Watch out
“Ich kann die Unterlagen nicht bevor zehn Uhr abholen.” → “Ich kann die Unterlagen nicht vor zehn Uhr abholen.”: English “before” is both preposition and conjunction. German splits them: vor before a time or noun, bevor only before a clause with a verb (bevor ich arbeite).

Translate into German: I cannot collect the documents before ten o’clock.
Show answer or example answer
Vor zehn Uhr kann ich die Unterlagen nicht abholen.
“Vor zehn Uhr” opens the sentence, so “kann ich” follows. “Nicht” stands before the infinitive, and the separable “abholen” stays together after the modal.
Put the words in order: denkbare / der / früheste / ist / nur / Zehn / Zeitpunkt
Show answer or example answer
Zehn ist nur der früheste denkbare Zeitpunkt.
“Früheste” is the superlative of früh with the weak ending -e after der. “Denkbar” means conceivable; “nur” limits the time to a minimum.
Write this sentence in German: Then I will not yet treat your information as a commitment.
Show answer or example answer
Dann halte ich deine Angabe noch nicht für eine Zusage.
“Halten für + accusative” means to regard as: “für eine Zusage”. “Noch nicht” shows this may change once a firm time is given.
