The idea

“Nicht unbedingt” and “nicht zwingend” both mean not necessarily; zwingend is more formal. They stand before the part they qualify. “Zum + nominalised infinitive” expresses purpose: Zeit zum Arbeiten, zum Lesen. Könnten (Konjunktiv II) presents the reason as a possibility, not a fact. “Etwas folgt aus etwas” means something follows from it logically.

Other ways to say it

“Das muss nicht heißen, dass wir mehr Zeit haben.” – Neutral; “muss nicht heißen” means does not have to mean.

“Nicht zwingend, das hängt von den Unterlagen ab.” – Formal and short; suits meetings.

“Nicht unbedingt, oder?” – Casual; invites the other person to reconsider.

Examples

  • Ein späterer Termin bedeutet nicht unbedingt mehr Zeit zum Arbeiten.A later deadline does not necessarily mean more time to work.
  • Warum folgt das nicht automatisch? Why does that not follow automatically?
  • Die Unterlagen könnten ebenfalls später ankommen. The documents might also arrive later.
  • Dann müssen wir beide Zeitpunkte betrachten. Then we need to consider both times.
  • Genau, der Zusammenhang ist nicht zwingend.Exactly; the connection is not inevitable.
  • Gut, ich formuliere die Aussage vorsichtiger.Good; I will phrase the statement more cautiously.

Watch out

“Ein späterer Termin bedeutet unbedingt nicht mehr Zeit.” → “Ein späterer Termin bedeutet nicht unbedingt mehr Zeit.”: The order matters: “nicht unbedingt” means not necessarily, while “unbedingt nicht” means definitely not. Swapping them changes the meaning completely.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: A later deadline does not necessarily mean more time to work.

Ein späterer Termin bedeutet nicht unbedingt mehr Zeit zum Arbeiten.

Später becomes the adjective späterer before masculine Termin. “Nicht unbedingt” qualifies “mehr Zeit”; zum Arbeiten gives the purpose.

  2. Put the words in order: ankommen / Die / ebenfalls / könnten / später / Unterlagen

Die Unterlagen könnten ebenfalls später ankommen.

Könnten is Konjunktiv II for a possibility. Ebenfalls means also; ankommen stays whole at the end after the modal.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; I will phrase the statement more cautiously.
