The idea
“Über etwas nachdenken” takes über + accusative; with a thing it becomes “darüber”. The wenn-clause sends “nachdenke” to its end and fills position one, so the main clause starts with its verb (“passt”). Konjunktiv II “hätten” presents the advantage as hypothetical. “Zum Umsteigen” is a nominalised infinitive meaning for changing trains.
Other ways to say it
“Wenn ich es mir recht überlege, nehmen wir lieber den früheren Zug.” – Neutral and very idiomatic; the standard “on second thought”.
“Bei genauerem Hinsehen passt der frühere Zug besser.” – Neutral to formal; suggests you looked at the details again.
“Ach nein, lass uns doch den früheren Zug nehmen.” – Casual; quick spoken correction among friends.
Examples
- Wenn ich noch einmal darüber nachdenke, passt der frühere Zug besser. On second thought, the earlier train fits better.
- Was spricht jetzt für die frühere Verbindung? What now favors the earlier service?
- Damit hätten wir mehr Zeit zum Umsteigen. That would give us more time to change trains.
- Dann vergleichen wir beide Verbindungen noch einmal. Then let us compare both services again.
- Mein erster Vorschlag war wohl zu knapp geplant. My first suggestion was probably too tightly scheduled.
- Gut, dass wir die Möglichkeit noch prüfen können. It is good that we can still check the option.

Watch out
“Auf zweiten Gedanken passt der frühere Zug besser.” → “Wenn ich es mir recht überlege, passt der frühere Zug besser.”: “On second thought” has no literal German equivalent; “auf zweiten Gedanken” sounds foreign. German uses a clause such as “wenn ich es mir recht überlege” or “wenn ich noch einmal darüber nachdenke”.

Wenn ich noch einmal darüber nachdenke, passt der frühere Zug besser.
The wenn-clause ends with “nachdenke” and stands in first position, so the main clause opens with “passt”. “Besser” compares with the earlier plan.

Damit hätten wir mehr Zeit zum Umsteigen.
“Damit” means with that option; “hätten” is Konjunktiv II for a hypothetical benefit. “Zum Umsteigen” uses the capitalised infinitive as a noun after zum.
Write this sentence in German: It is good that we can still check the option.

Gut, dass wir die Möglichkeit noch prüfen können.
“Gut, dass …” is short for “Es ist gut, dass …”. In the dass-clause the verbs go to the end: “prüfen können”, with the modal last.
