The idea

Insgesamt, alles in allem and im Großen und Ganzen introduce an overall judgement; in first position they push the verb before the subject. The qualification often follows with aber or trotzdem. “Etwas schließt etwas nicht aus” means one thing does not rule out another. Differenziert describes a judgement that weighs several aspects. “Mehr … als erwartet” compares with no comma because no clause follows.

Other ways to say it

“Alles in allem war es gut, auch wenn nicht alles geklappt hat.” – Neutral; the auch-wenn clause adds the limit.

“Im Großen und Ganzen bin ich zufrieden.” – Neutral idiom; common in spoken feedback.

“Insgesamt fällt meine Bewertung positiv aus, mit einzelnen Einschränkungen.” – Formal; suits written evaluations and surveys.

Examples

  • Insgesamt war die Zusammenarbeit für mich hilfreich.Overall, I found working together helpful.
  • Gab es trotzdem etwas Schwieriges? Was there nevertheless anything difficult?
  • Die Terminabstimmung hat mehr Zeit gebraucht als erwartet.Scheduling took more time than expected.
  • Dann gehört dieser Punkt in die Rückmeldung. Then that point belongs in the feedback.
  • Ja, mein positives Gesamturteil schließt einzelne Probleme nicht aus.Yes, my positive overall assessment does not exclude individual problems.
  • Gut, so wird die Bewertung differenzierter.Good; that makes the assessment more nuanced.

Watch out

“Insgesamt die Zusammenarbeit war hilfreich.” → “Insgesamt war die Zusammenarbeit hilfreich.”: Insgesamt takes first position, so the finite verb war must come second. English word order with the subject first is a frequent slip.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Overall, I found working together helpful.

    Show answer or example answer

Insgesamt war die Zusammenarbeit für mich hilfreich.

Insgesamt first, then war, then the subject. “Für mich” limits the judgement to the speaker.

  2. Put the words in order: als / Die / erwartet / gebraucht / hat / mehr / Terminabstimmung / Zeit

    Show answer or example answer

Die Terminabstimmung hat mehr Zeit gebraucht als erwartet.

Perfect of brauchen with haben. “Mehr Zeit … als erwartet” compares without a comma; Terminabstimmung means coordinating dates.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; that makes the assessment more nuanced.

Gut, so wird die Bewertung differenzierter.

So means in this way. Werden with the comparative differenzierter describes a change in the assessment.

After a two-week language course, the school asks for feedback. Write two sentences: an overall judgement with insgesamt and one specific point that could be better.
