The idea

In “je + comparative …, desto + comparative …”, the je-part is a subordinate clause with its verb at the end; the desto-part is followed by the verb and then the subject. “Umso” can replace desto. The short phrase “Je eher, desto besser” works on its own. Separate wish and deadline: a wish uses the comparative, a deadline uses “bis + time”.

Other ways to say it

“Je eher, desto besser.” – Neutral to casual; short and common, but gives no real deadline.

“Eine baldige Antwort wäre mir eine große Hilfe.” – Formal and polite; typical in emails with Sie.

“Wenn du es früher weißt, sag gern schon Bescheid.” – Casual and friendly; invites an early answer without pressure.

Examples

  • Je früher du antwortest, desto leichter kann ich planen. The sooner you reply, the easier it will be for me to plan.
  • Gibt es trotzdem einen spätesten Zeitpunkt? Is there nevertheless a latest time?
  • Bis Donnerstag brauche ich auf jeden Fall Bescheid.I definitely need to know by Thursday.
  • Ich versuche, mich schon morgen zu melden.I will try to get back to you tomorrow.
  • Eine frühe Antwort hilft, ist aber keine zusätzliche Pflicht. An early reply helps, but it is not an additional obligation.

Watch out

“Je früher du antwortest, desto ich kann leichter planen.” → “Je früher du antwortest, desto leichter kann ich planen.”: After desto the comparative comes first, then the finite verb, then the subject. Learners keep English order and put the subject right after desto.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The sooner you reply, the easier it will be for me to plan.

    Show answer or example answer

Je früher du antwortest, desto leichter kann ich planen.

“Je früher du antwortest” is subordinate, with “antwortest” last. “Desto leichter” is followed by the verb “kann”, then “ich”, and “planen” ends the clause.

  2. Put the words in order: auf / Bescheid / Bis / brauche / Donnerstag / Fall / ich / jeden

    Show answer or example answer

Bis Donnerstag brauche ich auf jeden Fall Bescheid.

“Bis Donnerstag” opens the sentence, so “brauche ich” follows. “Bescheid brauchen” means to need to know; “auf jeden Fall” means definitely.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I know both the preference and actual deadline.

Dann kenne ich Wunsch und tatsächliche Frist.

“Kenne” has two objects joined by und: “Wunsch und tatsächliche Frist”. “Tatsächlich” means real or actual and contrasts with the wish.
