The idea

“Etwas verwechseln” takes an accusative object, often two things: die beiden Ordner, or “A mit B verwechseln”. “Entschuldigung” is a quick apology; “Es tut mir leid, dass …” is fuller and names the consequence, with the verb at the end. Entstehen forms the perfect with sein: ist entstanden. Dadurch means as a result of that. Gehören zu means to belong to.

Other ways to say it

“Sorry, da habe ich was verwechselt.” – Casual; sorry is widely used in everyday German.

“Entschuldigen Sie bitte die Verwechslung.” – Formal; suits customers, authorities and written messages.

“Mein Fehler, ich habe die Dateien vertauscht.” – Neutral; takes clear responsibility for the slip.

Examples

  • Entschuldigung, ich habe die beiden Ordner verwechselt.Sorry; I mixed up the two folders.
  • Welche Datei gehört denn zu unserem Vorgang?Which file belongs to our case, then?
  • Die richtige Datei liegt im grünen Ordner. The correct file is in the green folder.
  • Dann öffnen wir diese Fassung. Then let us open that version.
  • Es tut mir leid, dass dadurch Verwirrung entstanden ist.I am sorry that this caused confusion.
  • Danke für die schnelle Klarstellung.Thank you for the quick clarification.

Watch out

“Ich habe die beiden Ordner gemischt.” → “Ich habe die beiden Ordner verwechselt.”: English “mix up” suggests mischen, but mischen means to stir or blend together. Confusing one thing for another is verwechseln or vertauschen.
