The idea

“Es kommt anders als geplant” is a common idiom for plans changing; the perfect is “ist anders gekommen”. “Anders als geplant” needs no comma because no full clause follows. “Am Ende” means in the end. Erst with a time means later than expected: erst eine halbe Stunde später. The passive with modals, “mussten getauscht werden”, describes a forced change without naming who made it.

Other ways to say it

“Es kam dann doch ganz anders.” – Casual storytelling; doch adds a sense of surprise.

“Der Ablauf hat sich kurzfristig geändert.” – Neutral; kurzfristig means at short notice.

“Abweichend vom Plan wurde die Reihenfolge angepasst.” – Formal and written; typical of reports and minutes.

Watch out

“Am Ende hat der Ablauf anders gekommen.” → “Am Ende ist der Ablauf anders gekommen.”: Kommen is a verb of movement and change, so it forms the perfect with sein. English “has turned out” tempts learners to use haben.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: In the end, the process turned out differently from planned.

    Show answer or example answer

Am Ende ist der Ablauf anders gekommen als geplant.

“Am Ende” first, then ist, then the subject. Gekommen closes the perfect; “als geplant” follows without a comma.

  2. Put the words in order: an / Die / eine / erst / Gruppe / halbe / kam / später / Stunde

    Show answer or example answer

Die Gruppe kam erst eine halbe Stunde später an.

Ankommen splits in the past: kam … an. Erst with “eine halbe Stunde später” shows the delay was unexpected.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; let us distinguish the process from the result.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, unterscheiden wir also Ablauf und Ergebnis.

A “wir” imperative with the verb first: unterscheiden wir. “Also” draws the conclusion; Ablauf and Ergebnis are kept apart.
