The idea

Gern, lieber, am liebsten is the comparison for preferences. “Ich würde lieber + infinitive” is the most polite form; “Ich möchte lieber” and plain “Ich … lieber” are more direct. The infinitive goes to the end: lieber zuerst schriftlich klären. Könnten, also Konjunktiv II, makes an alternative sound open: “Danach könnten wir immer noch sprechen.”

Other ways to say it

“Mir wäre eine E-Mail lieber.” – Neutral; puts the person in the dative and the preferred thing as subject.

“Ich schreibe dir lieber erst mal.” – Casual; direct present tense with erst mal.

“Ich würde es vorziehen, das zunächst schriftlich zu klären.” – Formal; vorziehen means to prefer and suits work emails.

Watch out

“Ich würde mehr gern die Frage schriftlich klären.” → “Ich würde die Frage lieber schriftlich klären.”: Gern has an irregular comparative: lieber, not “mehr gern”. Like English “rather”, it comes before the part of the sentence you prefer.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I would rather clarify the question in writing first.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich würde die Frage lieber zuerst schriftlich klären.

Würde is second, klären at the end. Lieber, zuerst and schriftlich stand in the middle field and narrow the preference.

  2. Put the words in order: Angaben / die / genauer / ich / Ja / kann / ordnen / so

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, so kann ich die Angaben genauer ordnen.

So means “that way” and takes first position, so kann follows. Genauer is the comparative of genau.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us begin with a brief message.

Dann beginnen wir mit einer kurzen Nachricht.

“Mit etwas beginnen” takes the dative: mit einer kurzen Nachricht. Dann makes it the agreed next step.

Use it today

A colleague wants to discuss your holiday dates in a video call. Say with würde … lieber that you would rather send them by email first, and give one reason.
