The idea

Nouns are negated with kein: “Nein, das ist keine besondere Nachricht”, where keine takes the ending of eine. Brauchen takes an accusative object, and eine stands alone as a pronoun: “Dann braucht dein Boot vielleicht eine”. Hängen bleiben an means to get caught on something, as in “Am Rand bleibt es an einem Blatt hängen”.

Watch out

Like Nela, a reader may think the words on the first boat are a secret note. Finn explains that the paper had his shopping list on the back: “Brot, Milch, Äpfel.” The real message is written only later, on purpose, for the second boat.
