Work through the German examples, attempt the exercises before opening the answers, and use the method in your own learning.

The idea

First attempt the German sentence, then consult a translation for the unclear part. Return to the original and notice its forms. Finally hide the help and reuse the pattern. A translation explains meaning; it does not tell you that German case or word order matches another language.

Examples

  • Ich versuche zuerst, den deutschen Satz zu verstehen.
  • Dann prüfe ich eine schwierige Stelle.
  • Die Übersetzung erklärt die Bedeutung.
  • Ich vergleiche trotzdem die deutschen Formen.
  • Danach verdecke ich die Hilfe.
  • Ich benutze das Muster in einem neuen Satz.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not copy your own language's grammar back into German merely because the meanings are similar.

Try it yourself

  1. Bedeutung verstanden: Ich helfe dem Kind. Welchen Fall hat dem Kind?

    Show answer or example answer

    Dativ.

Helfen takes dative: the phrase is dem Kind.

  2. Was folgt nach dem Lesen der Übersetzung: nur weiterblättern oder den deutschen Satz selbst verwenden?

    Show answer or example answer

    Den deutschen Satz selbst verwenden.

Using the German sentence yourself practises recall after meaning has become clear.

  3. Ersetzen Sie Kind durch Frau: Ich helfe ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    der Frau

The feminine dative form is der Frau, not die Frau.
