The idea
Farid tells his past in the present tense, which makes it vivid: “Er kennt damals niemanden”, where damals marks the past. Seitdem links the past to now: “Seitdem treffen sie sich jeden Mittwoch dort”. Erinnern an takes the accusative: “Sie erinnert mich an unser erstes Gespräch”. Weil sends the verb last: “weil Farid früh am Morgen fotografiert hat”.

Watch out
Because the story is told in the present tense, readers may think Farid is still alone in the city. Damals marks the lonely week as past, and “Seitdem treffen sie sich jeden Mittwoch dort” shows a lasting friendship. The bench is empty only because of the early photo.
