The idea
Compare the closed question “ob es schön gewesen sei” with Nora’s open one: “Was habt ihr zusammen gemacht, das ihr sonst selten macht?” Her question uses the perfect and a relative clause introduced by das. Amir’s first sentence “Ich war bei meiner Schwester” shows bei plus dative for visiting a person. The passive-like “nur mit ja oder nein beantwortet werden” describes exactly what a closed question is.

Watch out
Readers may think Amir lacks vocabulary. The text says: “Er kannte zwar viele Wörter, wusste aber nicht, was er noch hinzufügen sollte.” The problem is the question type, not his German. Nora’s question works because it “einen konkreten Anfang angeboten hatte”, not because it demanded a longer answer.
