The idea
Comparatives add -er, sometimes with an umlaut: “Mein Weg ist kürzer” and “Mein Weg war länger”. The title uses the superlative der kürzeste Weg. The ending moves into the simple past of sein and haben, “Aber du hattest mehr zu sehen”, where haben plus zu plus infinitive means there was something to do.
Words from the story

Neben ihm stehen zwei Becher Wasser. „Dein Weg war also doch kürzer“, sagt Rosa.

Watch out
Because Amir arrives first, readers may conclude that his path was shorter. Amir denies it: “Mein Weg war länger. Aber du hattest mehr zu sehen.” Rosa’s route was shorter in distance, but her stops cost her time.
