The idea
Möchten plus infinitive expresses a wish, with the infinitive at the end: “Sie möchte ihrer Freundin ein Heft bringen”, where ihrer Freundin is the dative (to whom). In Germany the first floor above ground is der erste Stock, as in “das Fenster im ersten Stock”. Daneben is a compact way to say next to it.
Words from the story
die Klingel – doorbell
drücken – to press
der Vorhang – curtain
kaputt – broken
der Lichtschalter – light switch
das Treppenhaus – stairwell
der Stock – floor, storey

Noor steht vor einem kleinen Haus. Sie möchte ihrer Freundin ein Heft bringen. Sie drückt auf die Klingel. Nichts passiert.

Watch out
Because “Nichts passiert”, readers tend to accept Noor’s guess that the bell is broken. The friend’s answer shows the real cause: “Das ist der Lichtschalter für die Treppe.” Noor pressed the wrong button, and the bell works perfectly.
