The idea
The neighbour’s complaint is friendly understatement: “Aber ich kenne jetzt den Anfang schon fünfmal”. An indirect yes/no question uses ob with the verb last: “fragt sie, ob er einmal die ganze Rede hören möchte”.
Words from the story

Read the text

Watch out
Readers may take the neighbour’s visit as a complaint about noise. He actually praises her: “Deine Rede klingt gut.” His point is that she never finished: “ich kenne jetzt den Anfang schon fünfmal.” He gladly listens to the whole speech.

Retell Two listeners at the window in four German sentences: the opening situation, the difficulty, the key observation and the outcome. Then write one plausible alternative ending and mark it clearly as your own invention. Compare your retelling with the text to check that you did not invent details unintentionally.
