The idea

Days take an plus dative: am Montag, an welchen Tagen. Die Berufsschule is the vocational school in Germany’s dual training system; school may be on fixed weekdays or in blocks (Blockunterricht), depending on the trade and region. Einplanen means to schedule. “Aufeinander abstimmen” means to coordinate two things with each other. Gelten für plus accusative says what a rule applies to: für den ganzen Monat.

Other ways to say it

“Wann habe ich Berufsschule?” – Short and everyday; fine with your trainer.

“Habe ich Blockunterricht oder feste Schultage?” – Asks which school model applies.

“Mein Schulplan ändert sich ab März, ich bringe ihn mit.” – Practical; offers to bring the timetable.

Examples

  • An welchen Tagen ist die Berufsschule eingeplant? On which days is vocational school scheduled?
  • Die aktuelle Übersicht nennt Montag und Donnerstag. The current overview says Monday and Thursday.
  • Gelten diese Tage für den ganzen Monat?Do those days apply for the whole month?
  • Bitte vergleichen Sie sie mit dem Schulplan. Please compare them with the school schedule.
  • Ich möchte die beiden Pläne aufeinander abstimmen.I would like to coordinate the two schedules.
  • Dann markieren wir mögliche Überschneidungen frühzeitig. Then let us mark possible overlaps early.

Watch out

“In welchen Tagen ist die Berufsschule eingeplant?” → “An welchen Tagen ist die Berufsschule eingeplant?”: Weekdays and dates take an, not in: am Montag, an welchen Tagen. In is for months, seasons and years, which is why learners mix them up.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: On which days is vocational school scheduled?

    Show answer or example answer

An welchen Tagen ist die Berufsschule eingeplant?

“An welchen Tagen” is dative plural after an. The state passive “ist … eingeplant” tells what has been scheduled.

  2. Put the words in order: den / diese / für / ganzen / Gelten / Monat / Tage

    Show answer or example answer

Gelten diese Tage für den ganzen Monat?

A yes/no question with “Gelten” first. “Diese Tage” is the plural subject, and “für den ganzen Monat” is accusative after für.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us mark possible overlaps early.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann markieren wir mögliche Überschneidungen frühzeitig.

“Markieren” takes the accusative “mögliche Überschneidungen”. “Frühzeitig” means in good time, before the conflict happens.

Use it today

Your new apprenticeship rota shows you working on Wednesdays, but your school timetable lists Wednesday too. Write a short message to your trainer pointing out the overlap.
