The idea

Frühestens (at the earliest) and spätestens (at the latest) set limits. Dates use am plus ordinal: am ersten November, am 1. November. Konjunktiv II forms (könnte, wäre, müssten) make offers and conditions sound polite and tentative. “Für ein kurzes Gespräch wäre ich verfügbar” means you could come in for a talk. Die Einführung or Einarbeitung is the induction; it may take longer than a meeting, so employers often plan it separately.

Other ways to say it

“Ab dem ersten November stehe ich zur Verfügung.” – Formal; common in applications and emails.

“Vor November kann ich leider noch nicht anfangen.” – Neutral; states the limit from the other side.

“Mein frühestmöglicher Eintrittstermin ist der 1. November.” – Very formal; Eintrittstermin is the HR term for start date.

Examples

  • Ich könnte frühestens am ersten November beginnen.I could start on the first of November at the earliest.
  • Wäre eine Einführung davor möglich?Would an introductory session before then be possible?
  • Für ein kurzes Gespräch wäre ich verfügbar.I would be available for a brief discussion.
  • Die praktische Einführung benötigt einen ganzen Vormittag. The practical introduction requires a whole morning.
  • Dann müssten wir dafür einen späteren Termin wählen. Then we would need to choose a later date for it.
  • Gut, wir unterscheiden Gespräch und tatsächlichen Start.Good; let us distinguish the discussion from the actual start.

Watch out

“Ich könnte frühestens im ersten November beginnen.” → “Ich könnte frühestens am ersten November beginnen.”: Specific dates take am (an dem), months alone take im: am ersten November, but im November. Learners use im because November is a month.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I could start on the first of November at the earliest.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich könnte frühestens am ersten November beginnen.

“Könnte” is Konjunktiv II and sounds tentative; the infinitive “beginnen” goes last. “Frühestens am ersten November” sets the lower limit with am plus ordinal.

  2. Put the words in order: ein / Für / Gespräch / ich / kurzes / verfügbar / wäre

    Show answer or example answer

Für ein kurzes Gespräch wäre ich verfügbar.

“Für ein kurzes Gespräch” opens, so “wäre” follows before “ich”. Wäre, the Konjunktiv II of sein, makes the offer polite.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; let us distinguish the discussion from the actual start.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, wir unterscheiden Gespräch und tatsächlichen Start.

“Unterscheiden” takes two accusative nouns: Gespräch und tatsächlichen Start. Tatsächlich means real, as opposed to just a first meeting.
