The idea

Build article, adjective and noun in that order: ein kleiner Raum. For a full description use der Raum ist klein, with no adjective ending.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

In a normal Modern Standard Arabic noun phrase, an attributive adjective follows its noun. In German ordinary attributive adjectives usually precede the noun and take an ending; a predicate adjective after sein follows a different pattern.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Wir suchen einen Raum großen. Wir suchen einen großen Raum.

Build article, adjective and noun in that order: ein kleiner Raum. For a full description use der Raum ist klein, with no adjective ending.

Examples

  • Eine schmale Treppe führt zum Dachboden.A narrow staircase leads to the attic.
  • Der Raum im Obergeschoss ist besonders hell. The room upstairs is particularly bright.
  • Ich nehme die warme Jacke vom Haken.I take the warm jacket off the hook.
  • Auf dem Tisch liegen frische rote Äpfel.Fresh red apples lie on the table.
  • Die neue Aufgabe ist kurz und übersichtlich. The new task is short and clear.
