The idea
Use present-tense German when the situation began earlier and is still true. Do not transfer the English auxiliary have into every such sentence.
One contrast, not a prediction about every learner
English often uses a present perfect with since or for when a situation continues. German normally uses the present with seit for the same continuing situation; a finished past period needs a different time frame.
Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.
Repair the transfer
Für eine seit März bis jetzt andauernde Wohnsituation ist Präsens falsch.Für eine seit März bis jetzt andauernde Wohnsituation passt: Ich wohne seit März hier.Use present-tense German when the situation began earlier and is still true. Do not transfer the English auxiliary have into every such sentence.
Examples
- Ich wohne seit März über einer kleinen Werkstatt.I have lived above a small workshop since March.
- Unsere Gruppe lernt seit sechs Wochen zusammen. Our group has been studying together for six weeks.
- Mila arbeitet seit Montag im neuen Team.Mila has been working in the new team since Monday.
- Der Laden ist seit einer Stunde geöffnet. The shop has been open for an hour.
- Wir warten seit zwanzig Minuten auf eine Antwort. We have been waiting for a reply for twenty minutes.
- Früher wohnte ich zwei Jahre in Bremen.I used to live in Bremen for two years.
