The idea

Treat German gender as part of the German word, even when you already know a gendered Polish translation. Check the German article and pronoun together.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Polish and German both have grammatical gender, but translated nouns need not share it. For example, Polish słońce is neuter while German Sonne is feminine.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Das Sonne scheint. Die Sonne scheint.

Treat German gender as part of the German word, even when you already know a gendered Polish translation. Check the German article and pronoun together.

Examples

  • Die Sonne scheint heute direkt auf unseren Balkon. The sun shines directly onto our balcony today.
  • Das Mädchen wartet mit seinem Bruder im Hof.The girl waits in the courtyard with her brother.
  • Die Tür ist schwer, aber sie öffnet sich leicht. The door is heavy, but it opens easily.
  • Der Name steht oben, und er ist richtig geschrieben. The name is at the top, and it is spelled correctly.
  • Das Fenster ist offen, obwohl es draußen kalt ist.The window is open although it is cold outside.
  • Die neue Adresse ist wichtig, deshalb notiere ich sie.The new address is important, so I write it down.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Treat German gender as part of the German word, even when you already know a gendered Polish translation. Check the German article and pronoun together.
