The idea

Store each German noun together with its article and plural. Keep grammatical gender separate from real-world gender and from Turkish translations.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Turkish does not assign nouns masculine, feminine or neuter grammatical gender. German articles encode this lexical information, so a Turkish meaning alone cannot tell you whether a German noun is der, die or das.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Tisch ist neu. Der Tisch ist neu.

Store each German noun together with its article and plural. Keep grammatical gender separate from real-world gender and from Turkish translations.

Examples

  • Der kleine Tisch passt neben das Fenster. The small table fits beside the window.
  • Die neue Lampe leuchtet angenehm warm. The new lamp gives a pleasantly warm light.
  • Das offene Regal steht im Flur. The open shelving unit is in the hallway.
  • Ich suche einen Stuhl für den Schreibtisch.I am looking for a chair for the desk.
  • Wir brauchen eine Schüssel für die Äpfel. We need a bowl for the apples.
  • Auf dem Foto ist ein altes Haus zu sehen. An old house can be seen in the photo.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Store each German noun together with its article and plural. Keep grammatical gender separate from real-world gender and from Turkish translations.
