The idea

Count constituents, not words: a long first phrase still occupies one position. Put the finite German verb immediately after it.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Turkish commonly places the verb near the end of a neutral clause, with variation for discourse. German declarative main clauses normally place the finite verb in the second constituent position, even when a time or place comes first.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Morgen ich im Garten arbeite. Morgen arbeite ich im Garten.

Count constituents, not words: a long first phrase still occupies one position. Put the finite German verb immediately after it.

Examples

  • Nach der langen Pause beginnt die zweite Übung. After the long break the second exercise starts.
  • Im kleinen Nebenraum wartet unsere Lerngruppe. Our study group is waiting in the small side room.
  • Heute bringt der Nachbar die Leiter zurück.Today the neighbor brings the ladder back.
  • Um halb acht fährt der erste Bus ab.The first bus leaves at half past seven.
  • Mit dieser Karte öffne ich die Seitentür.I open the side door with this card.
  • Den letzten Absatz lese ich später noch einmal.I read the final paragraph once more later.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Count constituents, not words: a long first phrase still occupies one position. Put the finite German verb immediately after it.
