The idea

Comparatives used before a noun take normal adjective endings: eine ruhigere Ecke, einen kleineren Raum. Voraussichtlich means probably, based on planning; höchstens means at most. Bis elf gives the end of availability. “Innerhalb dieses Zeitfensters” uses innerhalb plus genitive. “Einen Raum freigeben” means to make it available again; in the du imperative the prefix goes to the end: “Gib ihn … frei.”

Other ways to say it

“Ist gerade ein Telefonraum frei?” – Neutral; many offices have small rooms for calls.

“Ich ziehe mich für einen Call kurz zurück.” – Neutral; sich zurückziehen means to withdraw somewhere quiet.

“Könntet ihr kurz etwas leiser sein? Ich telefoniere mit einer Kundin.” – Informal but polite; asks the group to keep it down.

Examples

  • Für mein Kundengespräch brauche ich kurz eine ruhigere Ecke.I briefly need a quieter area for my customer call.
  • Wie lange wird das Gespräch dauern? How long will the call last?
  • Voraussichtlich höchstens zwanzig Minuten.Probably no more than twenty minutes.
  • Der kleine Raum ist bis elf frei. The small room is free until eleven.
  • Dann nutze ich ihn innerhalb dieses Zeitfensters. Then I will use it within that time window.
  • Bitte gib ihn danach wieder frei. Please make it available again afterwards.

Watch out

“Ich brauche kurz eine mehr ruhige Ecke.” → “Ich brauche kurz eine ruhigere Ecke.”: German forms comparatives with -er, never with mehr plus adjective. Before a noun the comparative also takes the normal ending: ruhig, ruhiger, eine ruhigere Ecke.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I briefly need a quieter area for my customer call.

    Show answer or example answer

Für mein Kundengespräch brauche ich kurz eine ruhigere Ecke.

“Für mein Kundengespräch” opens the sentence, brauche is second, ich third. Kurz softens the request, and ruhigere is comparative plus feminine ending.

  2. Put the words in order: höchstens / Minuten / Voraussichtlich / zwanzig

    Show answer or example answer

    Voraussichtlich höchstens zwanzig Minuten.

Short answer to a how-long question: voraussichtlich (probably) and höchstens (at most) together give a cautious upper limit.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please make it available again afterwards.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte gib ihn danach wieder frei.

Du imperative of freigeben: gib first, frei at the end. Ihn stands for den Raum, and danach means after the call.
