The idea

Könntest du plus infinitive is the standard polite request between colleagues on du terms. A condition can stand alone as a reply: “Wenn du dafür am Montag einspringst.” The main clause (“then I will do it”) is understood. Dafür means in return. Agreement uses einverstanden sein mit plus dative, softened with wäre: “Mit diesem Tausch wäre ich einverstanden.” Many workplaces require the swap to be approved by the Schichtleitung, so ask who will clear it.

Other ways to say it

“Hättest du Lust, mit mir die Schicht zu tauschen?” – Casual and friendly; suits colleagues you know well.

“Wäre ein Schichttausch am Freitag für Sie möglich?” – Formal with Sie; suits a colleague you do not know well.

“Kannst du Freitag für mich reingehen?” – Very colloquial; reingehen for working a shift is common in spoken German.

Examples

  • Könntest du meine Freitagsschicht übernehmen?Could you cover my Friday shift?
  • Wenn du dafür am Montag einspringst. If you stand in on Monday in return.
  • Mit diesem Tausch wäre ich einverstanden.I would agree to that swap.
  • Wer klärt es mit der Schichtleitung?Who will clear it with the shift supervisor?
  • Ich frage nach und melde mich danach.I will ask and get back to you afterwards.
  • Bis zur Bestätigung gilt noch der alte Plan. The old rota still applies until confirmation.

Watch out

“Mit diesem Tausch wäre ich einverstehen.” → “Mit diesem Tausch wäre ich einverstanden.”: Einverstanden is a fixed adjective used with sein; there is no verb “einverstehen”. Learners build it by analogy with verstehen, but only the participle-like form exists.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you cover my Friday shift?

    Show answer or example answer

    Könntest du meine Freitagsschicht übernehmen?

Könntest is the Konjunktiv II of können with du, which makes the question softer than kannst. Freitagsschicht is a compound: Freitag plus linking s plus Schicht.

  2. Put the words in order: diesem / einverstanden / ich / Mit / Tausch / wäre

    Show answer or example answer

Mit diesem Tausch wäre ich einverstanden.

“Mit diesem Tausch” takes the dative and opens the sentence, so wäre stays second and the subject ich follows; einverstanden closes the clause.

  3. Write this sentence in German: The old rota still applies until confirmation.

    Show answer or example answer

Bis zur Bestätigung gilt noch der alte Plan.

“Bis zur Bestätigung” (bis zu plus dative, zur = zu der) opens the sentence; gelten comes second and “der alte Plan” is the subject after it.

Use it today
