The idea

Stattfinden (to take place) is separable: “Die Besprechung findet im Büro statt.” In a yes/no question the stem comes first and the prefix still goes last. Rooms take in plus dative for location: im Aufenthaltsraum, im kleinen Büro. “Bei etwas bleiben” means to stay as before: Bleibt es bei halb zwei? German half-hours count towards the next hour: halb zwei is 1:30, not 2:30. When passing on a change, name only what changed.

Other ways to say it

“In welchem Raum ist die Besprechung heute?” – Neutral, open question; simple sein instead of stattfinden.

“Wir treffen uns also im kleinen Büro, richtig?” – Casual check with a tag question; fine within the team.

“Die Besprechung wurde ins kleine Büro verlegt.” – Neutral message for passing on the change.

Examples

  • Findet die Besprechung im Aufenthaltsraum oder Büro statt? Will the meeting take place in the lounge or office?
  • Die neue Einladung nennt das kleine Büro.The new invitation names the small office.
  • Bleibt die Uhrzeit bei halb zwei?Does the time remain half past one?
  • Ja, nur der Raum wurde geändert.Yes, only the room was changed.
  • Ich gebe genau diese Änderung weiter.I will pass on precisely that change.
  • Bitte informieren Sie auch die Kollegin im Außendienst. Please also inform the colleague working off site.

Watch out

“Die Besprechung ist um halb zwei, also um 14:30 Uhr.” → “Die Besprechung ist um halb zwei, also um 13:30 Uhr.”: German “halb zwei” means half an hour before two, so 1:30. English speakers read it as “half past two” and arrive an hour late.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Will the meeting take place in the lounge or office?

    Show answer or example answer

Findet die Besprechung im Aufenthaltsraum oder Büro statt?

Yes/no question: “Findet” first, the prefix “statt” last. “Im Aufenthaltsraum oder Büro” lets the preposition im cover both rooms, which is common in speech.

  2. Put the words in order: bei / Bleibt / die / halb / Uhrzeit / zwei

    Show answer or example answer

Bleibt die Uhrzeit bei halb zwei?

“Bleiben bei” means to stay at a previous value. The question checks that only the room changed; “halb zwei” is 1:30 in German time-telling.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please also inform the colleague working off site.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte informieren Sie auch die Kollegin im Außendienst.

A Sie imperative with bitte. “Auch” adds one more person; “die Kollegin im Außendienst” is the colleague working outside the building, for example on home visits.

Use it today

The team meeting has moved from the staff room to the small office, same time. Write a one-line message to a colleague on home visits that states only the change.
