The idea

Während plus genitive gives a time span: während meiner Pause, während der Übergabe. In speech you may hear the dative, but the genitive is standard. Annehmen (to accept, take) is separable: nimmt … an. “Über etwas Bescheid wissen” means to be informed about something, with über plus accusative. Erreichbar sein means to be reachable. Using a surname with Frau or Herr is the usual polite way to name a colleague to others.

Other ways to say it

“Frau Yilmaz vertritt mich in der Pause.” – Short and neutral; vertreten means to stand in for.

“Bis zwei Uhr bin ich in der Pause, Nachrichten bitte an Frau Yilmaz.” – Practical note style for a door sign or chat status.

“Ich bin kurz in der Pause, Frau Yilmaz übernimmt so lange.” – Friendly spoken version; so lange means for that time.

Examples

  • Während meiner Pause nimmt Frau Yilmaz die Nachrichten an.During my break, Ms Yilmaz will receive messages.
  • Weiß sie über die angekündigte Rückmeldung Bescheid?Does she know about the expected response?
  • Ja, die reine Kontaktinformation habe ich übergeben.Yes, I have handed over the contact information itself.
  • Wie lange dauert Ihre Pause? How long is your break?
  • Ich bin um vierzehn Uhr wieder erreichbar.I will be reachable again at two o’clock.
  • Dann ist der Übergabezeitraum klar festgehalten. Then the handover period is clearly recorded.

Watch out

“Während meine Pause nimmt Frau Yilmaz die Nachrichten an.” → “Während meiner Pause nimmt Frau Yilmaz die Nachrichten an.”: Während takes the genitive; for a feminine noun, mein becomes meiner. Learners often keep the nominative form meine because they do not expect a case after a time word.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: During my break, Ms Yilmaz will receive messages.

    Show answer or example answer

Während meiner Pause nimmt Frau Yilmaz die Nachrichten an.

“Während meiner Pause” is a genitive time phrase in first position, so “nimmt” comes second. The prefix “an” of annehmen closes the sentence.

  2. Put the words in order: die / habe / ich / Ja / Kontaktinformation / reine / übergeben

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, die reine Kontaktinformation habe ich übergeben.

The object “die reine Kontaktinformation” comes first for emphasis, then “habe ich übergeben”. “Rein” here means “only”: just the contact details, nothing else.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then the handover period is clearly recorded.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann ist der Übergabezeitraum klar festgehalten.

“Ist … festgehalten” is a state passive: the period is now recorded. “Klar” describes how: clearly, without doubt about the times.
