The idea

Polite requests use the Konjunktiv II: Könnten Sie …? Würden Sie …? The infinitive goes to the end: “Könnten Sie … erklären?” Einzeln (one at a time) and Schritt für Schritt are useful adverbs. Verwechseln means to mix things up. “Mit eigenen Worten” (in your own words) uses mit plus dative. Asking for a structured explanation is normal at work; many colleagues appreciate a clear question more than a nod.

Other ways to say it

“Können wir das bitte Schritt für Schritt durchgehen?” – Neutral; suggests going through it together.

“Das war mir etwas zu schnell, könnten Sie es noch einmal langsamer erklären?” – Polite and honest about the speed.

“Darf ich kurz zusammenfassen, wie ich es verstanden habe?” – Offers your summary as a check; very common at work.

Watch out

“Könnten Sie erklären die organisatorischen Schritte einzeln?” → “Könnten Sie die organisatorischen Schritte einzeln erklären?”: With a modal verb, the infinitive goes to the end of the clause. English word order puts “explain” right after “could you”, which learners copy.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you explain the organizational steps one by one?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnten Sie die organisatorischen Schritte einzeln erklären?

“Könnten Sie” opens the polite request, and the infinitive “erklären” closes it. “Einzeln” sits before the verb and asks for one step at a time.

  2. Put the words in order: die / ich / Ja / noch / Stellen / verwechsle / zuständigen

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, ich verwechsle noch die zuständigen Stellen.

“Verwechsle” is the standard ich form of verwechseln: verbs in -eln drop the e before -le. “Noch” shows the confusion is temporary, and “die zuständigen Stellen” are the responsible offices.

  3. Write this sentence in German: That way we will see exactly what remains unclear.

    Show answer or example answer

So erkennen wir genau, was noch unklar bleibt.

“So” refers to the summary in your own words. “Was noch unklar bleibt” is an indirect question with the verb “bleibt” at the end.
